Pro K-9 Training

Basic Obedience & Behavior Modification Program with BLCC

It's long been BLCC's goal to ensure each rescue dog has the appropriate obedience training and socialization to help them become a balanced dog, and ultimately find and stay in their forever homes. A very important part of this process are the numerous dedicated foster homes, volunteers and adopting homes who open their hearts and homes to our friends in need. BLCC wants to support the wonderful people involved in our efforts in every way, including providing valuable training resources.

In addition to the socialization training with Brian Walsh, we are now holding FREE structured classes with Jen Guthrie of PRO K-9, designed to provide all of you with the knowledge and skills needed to create happy, confident and well-mannered members of the family. The primary goal of these 5-week classes is to ensure everyone involved has a solid foundation for working with their current and future dogs, setting us all up for success!

We strongly urge all of our supporters to enroll in at least one class.

Week 1

Leadership & Behavior Modification Seminar (1-2 hours)

People only, no dogs. This information session is open to everyone regardless of obedience enrollment, and is a prerequisite for all obedience class/session students:
  • How to build leadership through daily interaction and strengthen your bond with your dog so they look to you for guidance and trust.
  • Learn how your dog learns and thinks so you can work on behavior problems such as mouthing, jumping, destructive chewing, escaping, stealing food/trash, housebreaking, excessive barking, digging, excitability, and more. There are many reasons why dogs display inappropriate behaviors -- understanding the source of the problems and making the appropriate changes is the key to turning them around.
  • New dog orientation -- Get off on the right paw by properly introducing a new dog to your home and managing a multiple-dog household.
  • Q&A and Homework (Yes, we give homework!)

Weeks 2-5

Basic Obedience Class (1 hour)

  • Small class sizes (up to 6 dogs) for as much one-on-one attention as needed, for dogs 16 weeks and older.
  • Basic obedience using positive reinforcement — your dog will work for your love and affection on COME, SIT, HEEL, DOWN, SIT-STAY, DOWN-STAY and more so you can use the obedience anywhere.
  • Learn how to apply obedience to real-life situations to begin working on behavior issues specific to both home and social settings.
  • Graduation! Each dog completing class will earn a Basic Obedience Certificate (a great boast on their adoption profiles!)

One-On-One Obedience Sessions (1/2 hour)

Each dog has a different personality and temperament and not every dog will benefit from the "classroom" environment initially. That's why we're also offering private one-on-one sessions for dogs that are overly stimulated in a group setting to begin their obedience training. In lieu of the 4 week 1-hour group class, we will work with you and your dog for 4 weekly 1/2 hour sessions after the Leadership & Behavior Modification Seminar. If you're uncertain of your dog's ability to focus in distracting environments, we will conduct a temperament evaluation prior to enrollment.

Email Brenda Woody to enroll: Brenda@betterlifecaninecenter.org

We will hold 2 classes on Saturday mornings on a first come, first serve basis. Please let us know if you're able to attend a Tuesday or Thursday morning class if Saturday classes exceed their 6 dog maximum. One-on-one sessions will also be available Tuesday and Thursday mornings. All family members are encouraged to participate!

NOTE: We are working on plans to offer these classes for discounted rates to other rescues -- please contact us for more information.
